The club scene in Goodfellas
In one of the early scenes in Good Fellas, Tommy DeVito, played by Joe Pesci, shares a story, to which Henry (Ray Liotta) responds, “you’re really funny.” This triggers an improvised burst by Joe who questions Henry how he’s funny. Henry, at a loss of words, explains that he’s just a funny guy with a funny story.
The terrifying burst of “funny like a clown?” and “I’m funny how?” leaves everyone noticeably uncomfortable. Apparently, the inspiration behind Joe’s tirade comes from how he once told a mobster that he was funny. You can imagine how horrifying it must have been to get yelled at by a gangster, and we think Joe did an excellent job shocking his co-stars to near-silence.
