A Transatlantic Act of Kindness
If you’re familiar with American history, you’ll remember that for long periods, Native Americans who inhabited the country before European settlers arrived have usually not had a very nice time. I think no one would fault them if they had withdrawn inward and concentrated on their own challenges rather than focusing on others’.
But not the Choctaw nation! After being forced off their ancestral homes, the Choctaws learned about an Irish potato famine that killed and starved many of Ireland’s impoverished citizens. They gave of their money to assist people in a foreign nation far from them, even though they had little themselves. And the friendship established by that action continues to this day.
