She Gave Up Her Seat
Almost everyone has heard of Rosa Parks. She was a brave civil rights activist who wouldn’t give up her seat and move to the back of the bus. But did you know that Rosa wasn’t the first African American woman to fight for her seat?
Nine months earlier a teenager named Claudette Colvin did a similar act and wouldn’t get up off of her seat on the bus. Claudette was arrested. Some people believe that the Civil Right’s movement publicized Rosa’s brave dead over Claudette’s because Rosa was considered more outwardly “attractive” at the time. Anyway, it’s time more people hear about Colvin as well.
