Footage
We use the word footage to refer to any kind of video or film, although the meaning behind the term is somewhat obsolete by now. While technology develops (and our culture develops with it), it seems as if the language is sometimes lagging behind. We still use words that have been relevant in the past, although they are meaningless today.
“Footage” is an example of such a word. In the past, film was measured in feet, and that’s how they screened films in the cinema. The origin of the word dates back to the days when film was measured in feet, hence the word “footage.” Although this technique is behind us, the word “footage” is still largely in use. Can you think of other such words?
