Unless you go to a specialty supermarket or live along the coast, grocery store lobster tanks are pretty few and far between. Why is that? It seems that almost every grocery store back in the day used to have a giant tank full of lobster and other seafood available for purchase. Well, lobster tanks have become a rare find for plenty of reasons. 

First, lobster has become extremely expensive—almost prohibitively expensive. It’s just not cost-effective for most big-box grocery stores to carry live lobster. Also, it costs a lot to ship live lobster to grocery stores, especially if they’re landlocked. Lobster tanks still exist in some grocery stores and markets. You just have to look for them.
