My Wings Are Tied
I’ve always wanted to know why we refer to having no money as being “broke.” One of the definitions of “break” is to be financially ruined, and it gradually became “broke” as a colloquial phrase. Broc was another name for misery or suffering centuries ago. The Persian version, on the other hand, seems more accurate and forgiving.
I advocate for using less cheesy expressions and choosing something more poetic. I’m not sure what to suggest, but maybe one of you reading this can start an online movement and get the next generation to use different words. It would only take a well-written Tiktok, in all honesty. After all, popular culture has a lot of influence on what we say. Consider “sick” and “cool,” for example!
