The movies didn’t lie about space and time being distorted
Contrary to popular belief, time and space are altered in the presence of a black hole. If you think about it, the movies and books that include black holes as part of the storyline aren’t entirely dramatized. The laws concerning time and space show that when objects move faster, then time slows down from an outside perspective. These same laws apply to black holes.
The gravitational force of a black hole can distort space and time for anything nearby. This is explained by the theory of relativity, which says that objects closer to a black hole experience time passing more slowly. The event horizon is the point at which matter (including light) gets drawn into the black hole, never to escape again. When this happens, the phenomenon known as ‘frame-dragging’ occurs, making it harder for things to move in directions opposite to the black hole’s motion. This distorted view of space and time can be extremely disorienting.
