Sahara (2005) – $105 million
When a book is adapted into a film, studios can bet that at least the book’s fans will come flocking to theaters. So, when Crusader Entertainment got the chance to turn Clive Cussler’s Sahara into a film, the studio spared no expense. With $200 million, they made sure to bring in the best A-listers they could get, which included Penelope Cruz and Matthew McConaughey.
When the movie did poorly at the box office, Clive was none too happy about how they had butchered his novel. He even sued the production studio for not consulting with him about the script. At the end of the day, nobody left happy, and plans to make a sequel were halted indefinitely.
