Homeowner associations are organizations that enforce the rules and regulations of a planned community, apartment complex, or tract home development. Typically, members of these communities are required to pay a monthly HOA fee for expenses and amenities. HOAs are supposed to be beneficial for the people who live in a community; these associations can pay for repairs, landscape maintenance, and more. However, as the these stories prove, some HOAs are truly maniacal. People across the country shared their most nightmarish HOA stories with the internet, and some of them are horrifyingly annoying. From unnecessary fines to 8 pm curfews, we put together the weirdest, the worst, and the ugliest HOA stories out there– just for you.
Make It Make Sense
This person used to live in a town that didn’t allow overnight parking near their apartment. Instead of parking their car on the street outside their apartment like a normal person, they had to park in a municipal lot a quarter of a mile away! To make matters even more inconvenient, cars had to be moved from the lot by 8:30 am every morning. We have no idea what city officials made up these insane rules, but they make absolutely no sense.
Our storyteller sucked it up and dealt with it for a while until tragedy struck. They injured their knee and had to walk on crutches. That inconvenient quarter-mile walk from the parking lot suddenly became a huge problem. In order to get temporary overnight parking by their apartment, they had to fax a doctor’s note to the city’s police department. It worked out in the end, but the whole situation was needlessly complicated.
