The Iconic Flower Behind the Hair
The iconic blossom that women in Hawaii wear in their hair is more than just a beautiful accessory. It actually is a symbolic part of the Hawaiian culture. The well-known plumeria traditionally worn by Hawaiian women represents their relationship status based on which ear the flower is tucked behind.
If a woman is wearing the plumeria over the right ear it means that she is single and ready to mingle, while wearing it over the left ear means that she’s in a relationship. The plumeria is not a native flower of Hawaii. It was introduced by a German botanist in 1860.
