It’s not hard to remember that women only recently gained the same rights as men in western cultures, but this really drives it home. These guys thought it would be a hoot to add a woman to the ballot and make a point that women didn’t belong in politics. Not just any woman, either; Susanna Salter was a political activist. They were probably expecting to prove their point that she should get back into the kitchen.

Karma and Fate had a field day with this one, though, as the joke failed spectacularly, and a point was definitely made. With over 60% of the votes in Susanna Salter’s favor, she really did become the first female mayor on American soil, the same year that women got the right to vote. They really should have thought that through.
