Born in ancient Sinope, Paphlagonia (now known as Turkey), Diogenes the Cynic was a Greek philosopher born in 412 BC. He was quite the character, getting banished from his place of birth for defiling currency, though there is speculation that it might have been his dad who did the deed.

He’s considered one of the founders of Cynicism, along with Antisthenes and Crates of Thebes. Though he’s credited with many philosophical ideas, none of his writings have survived. He supposedly wrote ten books and seven tragedies that have been lost to time. According to several sources, he’s also the first to use the term “cosmopolitan.”
