#11: It’s Funny Because It’s True
As an American, I can wholly attest that many people I know don’t fully grasp our language and certainly don’t know more than one. I’m sure it’s because our language is a huge amalgamation of many others and doesn’t easily lend to learning alternatives. Spanish and French have enough in common, at least structure-wise, to make it easier.
When it comes to Asian languages, I’ve always assumed that they work so hard to learn to write the languages that it becomes second nature to learn more. I’ve also been pretty jealous of how other languages have single words for concepts that take us an entire paragraph to explain. We have words like “procrastination” that don’t translate well. That says a lot.
