#45: Did You Know?
Evolution is wild and pretty much follows the whole “if it ain’t broke; don’t fix it” method of correction. Horseshoe crabs have survived in the same form for millennia because they’re already made in the perfect format for what they need to achieve. As marine animals with long lives and great immune systems, they just continue on the way they are.

They only live about twenty years on average, but they can lay over 4,000 eggs at a time and 88,000 eggs within a single season. They also aren’t crabs. In fact, they’re practically sea spiders. They’re much more closely related to arachnids and ticks than crabs. Still, their biggest threat is humans, and we are rapidly watching their numbers decline.
