District of Columbia – Ancient Military Monument
This old photograph traces back to the 1850s and depicts the Tripoli Monument, the oldest military monument in the state. The memorial was originally carved in Italy in 1806 to remember US Navy Veterans who had served during the First Barbary War.

The monument was shipped to the Washington Navy yard after it was completed but was relocated in 1831 to the Capitol building. In 1850, the statue was relocated again, this time in Annapolis, Maryland, at the United States Naval Academy.
